Adult Soapbox Derby 2008: Mt. Tabor

Total fun. For the 13th annual race there were 42 cars, half built for speed and the others built for… well… the “ART Cars.” Highlights as follows:

At 10:00 race organizer Zach Hull gives some safety rules and his famous speech, bagpipers play…

and THEY’RE OFF!!!!

(the spectators are fun too…)

Some of the FAST cars

“Fast” means about 1 minute 17 seconds from top to bottom. “Slow” might mean 3-7 minutes on the same course. Water balloons and water spraying are encouraged from racers and spectators. ART CARS:

Banana split and team banana split.

Polar bear…

The rockers–on one heat it was a girl group, on another pass guys. The mic is the steering.

the French snow-globe gals…

Whoville–Dr. Suess would be amazed. I happened to be at the finish when the Cat in The Hat on a bike shoved this very slow car over the finish line!!

Transformer–the crowd favorite–it raced as a truck and then came apart and became a famous robot from the 80’s–the “transformer” years.

This car was a wrestling ring and these guys could NOT STOP wrestling–they wrestled all the way down the hill, in the pits, on the side lines–phew. The rules state that the driver has to stay sober, but doesn’t mention the wrestlers…

the tarantula car was surprisingly fast and had a MAJOR water hose (in the driver’s hand in both pictures)

Surf’s up–procrastinator’s special–they were still rolling the paint on when we walked through the pits at 9:30.

The scene…and the BBQ car complete with BBQ smoking at the finish line.

The crowd is really as interesting as the racers and included the following:

this guy and his bike built in 1911 (he said he got new tires though…..)

this guy turned around just as I was taking the picture so you can’t see his beard–too bad. The wings are cute though.

media galore.

It was hot in the Park but it was fun!!!!
